Highlights of  The Kingdom of Kerry

The Ring of Kerry

The Ring of Kerry takes is 179km of narrow typical Irish west coast roads with stunning backdrops of mountains, lakes, rivers and the Atlantic ocean. Our route begins in the stunning Killarney National Park, travels into the fascinating village of Killorglin where you will hear about the unusual King Puck. The trip then hits the Atlantic coast line with views to the mountains of Dingle where some of the highest mountains in Ireland meet the sea.

The drama intensifies when we journey across to the Island of Valentia with views across to one of the most important UNESCO sights in the world - Skellig Michael. Then down into the town of Skellig and on into the quaint village of Sneem for a bite to eat.

Along the way we will pass through the hometowns of Daniel O'Connell - The Great Liberator, Stece 'Crusher' Casey - Heavyweight Champion of the world and Charlie Chaplin's favourite holiday spot.

The Ring of Kerry is truly one of the most breathtaking driving experiences you will ever experience.

Killarney National Park

We begin our adventure of the rugged Ring of Kerry in Killarney National Park.  This really is one of Irelands most diverse National parks where you can explore an array of historic settlements amidst some of our country's finest scenery.

We will weave our way through the park to visit the impressive Victorian Mansion, Muckross House, the sturdy 15th Century stronghold, Ross Castle and the early Christain ruins of Inishfallen Island, all of which are nestled among a trio of magical lakes that sparkle beneath the majestic peaks of Irelands highest mountain range, the MacGillycuddy Reeks.

While this park is a very popular attraction, with 26,000 acres of beautiful landscape, we always find a quiet place on this tour for you to experience the true tranquility and majesty of the park.

The Gap of Dunloe

The Gap of Dunloe is a spectacular mountain pass between the highest mountain peaks in Ireland - The Macillicuddy reeks and the fanciful named Purple mountain. The views are stunning and can only be reached only on small transport like our own. The roads wind and roll through the valley. Five stunning lakes will be encountered along the way meaning plenty of chances for some of the best photo opportunities in Ireland.

Depending on time and preference you can spice up your visit by travel through the Gap of Dunloe by jaunting car, pony or hike.

Rosses Castle & Inishfallen Island

Rosses castle is one of the highlights in the Killarney National Park. It is a beautifully restored 15th century gaelic towerhouse on the banks of Killarney's lower lake. It is a serene and tranquil setting offering incredible views to the mountains of the Macillicuddy Reeks. You can explore the banks of the river. Perhaps take a boat trip to the nearby Inishfallen Island or explore the castle grounds.

Like us you no doubt will fall in love with this small section of the national park.

Muckross House & Gardens

Muckross House & gardens are located on the Muckross peninusla between two lakes in the Killarney national park.  The exquisite tudor mansion dates to 1843 and was built for Henry Arthur Herbert. From the mansion stunning views across the lakes of Killarney and a view of the mountain ranges in the distance provide ample opportunites for walking and  photography. Horse and cart rides is also an option to enjoy more of the surroundings.

Valentia Island

Valentia Island is one of Ireland's many islands sitting off the west coast in the wild atlantic ocean. The island is accesible by bridge just off our Ring of Kerry drive along the WIld Atlantic Way. The island offers some of the best views to the Skelligs islands and some great short walks along Bray head. If we are luck we may even get to see the islands famous footprints. Over 350 million years old tetrapod footbrints in the limestone rock. A fascinating little island with the extra bonus of some of the best ice cream in Ireland !

The Skellig Islands

Skellig Michael is a one of the most isolated and astonishing UNESCO World Heritage sites on the planet. Jagged peaks rise 230metres, 13km from the west coast of Kerry in the wild Atlantic ocean. These most inhospitable of locations were to be the homes of some of Irelands early christians around the 6th to 8th centuries. These hermit priests lived torturous lifes living in confined beehive huts on the cliffs face. Whilst the rest of Europe was entering the Dak Ages, Christianity clung to cliff faces of these unique island. Without doubt one of our favouite locations in Ireland.

There are beautiful views to the Skelligs from the ring of Kerry and you can arrange to visit the islands time depending.

The Dingle Peninsula

The famous Dingle peninsula show cases some of the west of Ireland's most beautiful scenery with the towering Mount Brandon to the north and the wild atlantic ocean to the west. A 40km drive around Dingle reveals a mix of uniquely Irish wonders, like the Iron age ring fort of Dunbeg or the early Christain oratories and beehive huts like Gallarus Oratory.

Of course a visit to Dingle also must include a visit to say hello to Irleand's biggest romantic - Funghi, the resident dolphin of dingle bay.
